WA S.C.W and pre-S.C.W
Okay, I've seen a few guys talking about some western arms pistols, some being pre-scw and some being scw3 or 2 or whatever. I myself own a western arms pistol, but I don't exactly know what the difference is.
Would some of the WA experts care to explain what exactly makes people prefer one blowback system compared to the other? or the advantages and disadvantages of each? |

There is another thread where a lot
was written about the basic differences, search around. In general all WA's 1911/45's I've used are good. People don't tend to choose between WA's based on version. It's more about what you can get and what parts are available for a particular model. Ok, huff I'll write a little... In the beginning there was Magna. The old school WA system. Regular blow chamber, and a firing pin in the frame that gets struck by the moving hammer. Hammers sometimes break over time since they are striking the pin. SCW around this time meant Shibuya Custom Works— LE guns with LE parts. Then came SCW the gun version. A new longer blow chamber with redesigned parts and a new slotted firing pin that still gets hit by the hammer. Old slides won't fit these models. Rear sights don't screw through or into the chamber, they only screw into the slide. After this, comes the SCW2 versions. These have the same blow chamber as SCW1's but now the firing pin isn't hit by the hammer, it's linked to it via a pin that lets it flick out when the hammer moves forward. Supposed to give more consistent strikes to the valve... SCW3's once again have the SCW1 blow chamber but another redesign to the firing pin. It's still attached to the hammer, flicks out to strike the mag valve, but this one is a fat blob. New pin is supposed to be stronger and better than the SCW2 one... All work well. Some prefer the older guns, say they're built a little better, with better finish and less rattle... I tend to agree. I like the Magna and SCW1's. But I've also owned a few SCW2's and they've been nice as well, barring the occasional sear or worn leaf spring issue. |

your own. Easy advice for anyone looking to get a WA— get one of the newer ones with upgrades or metal kits in-stock ie: SCW3. Picking up an older model with no savvy for the market will only lead to selling at a lower price to me. Keep in mind Western Arms produces licensed replicas in small batches, cause they move on after to another and another model, so when you see parts come out for your exact model don't wait to buy them or you'll be sorry. Most SCW3's have a layer of copper sandwiched between 2 layers of durable/flexible abs so they're propane ready.

How are their mags though, the WA GBBR mags are notorious for propane problem stock, its not until the Heavy-Duty mag that it was ok for propane use stock...

GBB pistol mags are awesome so I'm surprised they did a poor job on the rifle mags. I have all kinds of mags: SV hicaps, various 1911's and they have a nice weight plus hold more gas than TM's A good buddy of my Ironsight, decided to get into WA a year ago or so because he was pining for an accurate Wilson. I warned him to avoid, since they were last produced in SCW1 form years ago so he'd have to look hard for parts. The last metal frames sold out just after he jumped in but metal slides are still in at Den. To the point, he built 2-3 of the WA Wilson's and confirmed for me, that his WA's hold a lot more gas and shoot with much more kick than his TM's. He's built 6-8 full metal TM 1911's over the past couple years. Some of the mags I have and was using regularly were/are 5–10 years old, stock. I prefer the magna to SCW1 ones when the feedlip was part of the all metal housing. SD also makes housings and full mags for the SV line. As we've seen over the past year, quality doesn't dominate the market, cheap guns do.

IMO the nicest part I like is the fact you can shoot them sideway....though I also like the fact that they seem to work with steel upgrades....not that I can afford it....hmmm

I guess... cause I shoot while diving behind cover... Due to the big blowback they have little issue with extra weight in the side. Metal slides are often much lighter than the stock abs slide. Afford it? WTF!!! you have all the toys and pay dirt for them. If anyone should be proving me right, it's you mofo! If I ever decide to sell the GSR, I'll give you dibs so you can have one WA in your lifetime.

my SCW1 1911 and SCW2 GSR both shoot sideways easily. Care to explain why? This is new to me, so I'm interested in this new topic
