Newbie questions#2
So, as most as you know, I am an underaged airsofter that is very curious and interested to find out more about the airsoft sport before I can actually play
1)I live in Toronto, so I can easily go to both indoor CQB airsoft games and outdoor airsoft games. I am stuck between buying a CQB like gun (ICS MP5 for example) or an outdoor like gun (TM AK-47 for example). Are you at a big disadvantage if you switch the guns around? (Using an MP5 at a outdoor airsoft event OR using the AK inside) Would you recommend me buying a CQB or a regular airsoft gun for a beginner like me? 2)I understand how to get age verified, but most of the threads posted on this website are not very helpful. The link does not work http://www.airsoftcanada.com/forumdisplay.php?f=117 And most of the other threads asking for GTA age verifiers get useless results, and very outdated. Please help Thank you for your time... |

1) Buy a mid-sized gun, something like a CQBR or a G36K. Retractable and/or folding stocks are your friend. Keep the gun under 350fps unless you want to have to change the spring to go indoors.

For #2...try this link.
http://www.airsoftcanada.com/showthread.php?t=11474 Strongly recommend TTAC3 for Toronto people to get verified and get introduced to the sport... For #1...do #2 and then get out to some games and talk to people. |

1. Rent, if possible
2. You can't get age verified, being a minor and all... Problem is, right now pretty much every gun for sale in Canada is in the classifieds, so your buying potential is pretty much fucked. |

Unlike real steel, where short arms like MP5s and CQB M4s are at a disadvantage for ranged combat, the gap isn't quite as big in airsoft. Due to the ballistics of firing a sperical projectile, range is quite limited overall with the majority of airsoft guns. The type of gun you use isn't as important as with real steel . The only real exception to this would be a specific sniper / marksman rifle with extended tightbore barrel and 450 fps velocity.
A regular MP5 shooting at 350 fps can just as easily be used indoors or out. Groupings won't be as tight and range will be shortened a bit with a short gun, but not substantially. I've had my JG MP5, M15 rifle, and Type 56 (Chinese AK) out to a friend's place in the country, and the range and of the guns was very comparable. I was actually very, very impressed with the long range accuracy of the MP5 using the iron sights even compared to my M15 with an Elcan scope. I bet that with a tightbore barrel, I would have been seeing about the same accuracy and range out of both guns. In the end, it's a matter of preference. If you want something that can be used for both CQB and outdoors, then an MP5 shooting around 350 fps (like a stock JG) would work well. An M4, with its collapsible stock will work well. Or even an AK with a folding stock would fit the bill quite well.

Thank you Crunchmeister for a very detailed answer. Thanks for the Link Saint. Renting might be the best bet for me...

Just wait. I'm 15, been at this site for 6 months now and I'm going to wait for another 3 years before I play. I'm playing paintball in the meantime though and learning as much as I can about the sport. Yeah, it sucks to wait but it's better than buying underage.
