Propane left in mags

I know there has been much talk over leaving gas in your mags. Most people recommend leaving some silicon oil impregnated gas in the mag. I was curious if i use propane with silicon oil will it degrade my seals? I have heard that it may, but others say that this has worked fine for them. It would be nice if someone cleared this up.

To be honest you will probably never get a strait anwser. But here is some food for toughts. I have 4 TM hicapa mags that have not been used in 2 months: 3 of them had propane in them and are fine. the last one was dry empty and now leaks like a bitch.

Every mag I have ever cleared the gas out and stored that way started to leak.

Every mag I stored with Gas in them have never leaked.

Draw your own conclusion's

always leave a bit of gas/silicone in your mags for storage. if you are worried about the propane .... do like i do: leave a smalll shot of DUSTER/silicone in your mags. that can of duster will last a long, long time...cheap insurance.

though fixing it is easy enough
I have 4 TM hi-capa mags
always with gas in them, emptied it the night before the game during my prep, game day, they all leaked like crazy.

raven suggested goop
but i took the mag apart(very easy), added some silicone lube and re-assembled with some locktight on the screw(very loose).
works fine

Here's something I've wondered...

What about 40mm grenade shells? They shipped from the factory without gas in them, and worked perfectly by the time I got them, so I'm tempted to leave them empty, but I don't want to ruin them. Are they somehow different and it's ok to leave them empty, or am I going to ruin them? I use duster, not propane, if that makes any difference.

If the mags are shipped along with the gun without gas in them, then how can leaving them empty for a day or a week cause them to leak?

From the factory they may have an oil or something in them that preserves the seals until it's used.

I don't know, just saying it's a possibility.

There's a belief that mags are shipped with gas.

I believe that they aren't and is merely a misconception.

"So what is that little puff of air that I get when I press the valve of a brand new mag?" I hear you asking.

That bit of air is the air you get from de-pressurization and re-pressurization as the magazine goes 30,000 feet up into the air... across the pacific ocean and on to North American soil. Combined with the incredibly cold temperatures of the cargo bay at that height and re-temperaturization once landed - what you get is an imbalance of air pressure levels between the inside of the mag versus the outside world.

Sometimes (many times), the spring on the release valve is weak enough to allow pressure to balance out between the interior and exterior of the magazine - and as a result, you don't get that same puff of air from a brand new mag.

Its better to leave some gas in them I can say that for certain. How you may ask? Well I used to have an M11, and during one fall game we had at night one of the mags I had fell out of my vest full of BBs and gas. Unfortunately we were not able to find the mag, and winter came along. The mag sat there on the ground through a whole Manitoba winter covered in snow, then through the spring sitting in water. During the summer when it was all dry again the mag was found, the mag still had gas and bbs in it. The mag was slightly corroded on the outside, the spring that pushes the bbs was corroded really badly. But the gas was fine still full in the mag. After we released the gas and cleaned off the mag of rust, also fixed the spring by pulling it out and cleaning it off. The mag was returned to working status, nothing was replaced, and it still holds gas fine no leaks.

There is a little gas or air in new mags. Once when I bought a TM Desert Eagle mag, I took it out of the package and played around with it. I pushed the gas valve release and I heard a little gas come out.

I've owned a KWA glock 19 for over a year and always emptyed the gas out after use.. never has a leak problem with it. I plan on doing the same with my WA mags.

I believe it basicly comes down to this.. you decided if you wanna keep gas in it or not both work the same to me.

Unless someone can sciencetifically discribe how keeping gas in the mag helps and how leaving it empty is bad or other way around.

my mosquito molds moscart came with enough gas in it that it wnet BANG when i pushed in the pin for the first time. scared the shit out of me, but my 4 c.a. ones did not have anything in them. a small amount of gas wouldn't hurt anything, but if you put some in as a test annd periodically checked them to see if the gas stayed in, it would be a good indication if any mags may have future seal/valve problems if they lost their gas. if you're storing for long periods it would be a good idea to put some silicone oil in the mags to keep the seals moist. the gas pressure will force the oil to move towards a leak and thru and this (over time) is also a tell-tale sign of seal failure.

A few months ago I got my Deagle repaired. When i got it back a week and a half later, the mag was leaking like crazy. I put gas in and it just comes out. I had to take it apart and put silicone oil on everything.
