NiMH immediate use

Figured it was time for a new battery so I bought a 9.6v 1600mah NiMH battery which is currently charging. Now, I've heard that with a new NiCAD you're supposed charge it fully, then drain it fully. Since NiMH have no memory, do I really have to do this? It's been charging for a while, and I just want a quick sample of the goods. I mean, I could wait a few hours more for it to charge fully, but I'm currently short on patience. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

If it's brand new, fully charge and discharge it. NiMH should be fully cycled once every three months or so, NiCad once a month. Beyond that, charge/discharge can be pretty much random, so long as you're not severely overcharging or discharging way too fast. Of course, you've got to make sure you have a NiMH charger... trickle charging is definitely not advised because you won't be able to tell by heat when it's fully charged, and the possible overcharging will damage the battery.
