The glow sticks are there for quick and easy access..Obviously they are not activated so it's not because they want to get shot. Glow sticks be it conventional lighted ones or IR ones are used for a variety of reasons. In House clearing they are left in rooms that have been cleared. Again they are not actually activated it's just a place to keep 'em.
Some of you need to read more and post less. The OP had a vaild point that got lost in the bs.

The red ones are usually the IR ones in the real world I believe, in airsoft their just red glow sticks.
From what I remember reading they use them to mark safe passage through danger zones. |

It's an AR-thing, isn't it? I haven't seen glow sticks strapped to any other stocks.

having it strapped to the stock helps prevent accidentally activating it since the stock is straight and rigid. some people like to thread it through their rigs molle or through the molle straps at the top of a pouch to take up some of the slack. only problem is that you can inadvertently activate them

no one wants, except the other team, to lean over an obstacle during a night game and have it activate. it could go unnoticed by the wearer until they get shot up. lol |

What I answered in the first response was true... No one in airsoft actually throws 2$ (which is approx. their cost) in each room to mark it as cleared. They are just there for the looks as it's been seen on several SOF pictures and people want to be l337 too.
Now for their real world use, it's what ex said. Just note though that their use is specified in each unit's SOPs so red, green, etc... might not always have the same use/signification.

Thanks for the info - managed to learn something from everybody's post.
P.S. Even the raving idea was better than mine. When I first saw it, I thought it might be a cheap way to do tracer rounds. Activate the glow stick, puncture it and smear some on the BBs. Voila, little glowing BBs. However, I was concerned that the glow stick fluid may affect the BB's travel through the magazine/gun and air. |

IR Chemlights are a solid purple colour. http://www.tacticalassaultgearstore....l/700802_a.jpg In the convential side of the CF(what I've seen/done anyways), IR chemlights are used to mark vehs(IFF); ever seen those upside down plastic water bottles taped to antennas, IR glow sticks are placed in them. You can run a piece of paracord/550cord through the hole on the top and use it as a "buzzsaw" for signalling air. They can also be placed in the helmet band of a helmet, etc and used as IFF. |
