Not Chinese, but:
Okay, If you saw me on the street, you could easily tell that I am NOT Chinese, i look more German then anything else, but I was curious if any white boys that were in china wore the chinese uniform, because i'll be honest, some of their kit is pretty cool and i was considering getting some of it for operations

Are you asking if troops from western countries who were garrisoned in china during either WW1 or WW2 took to wearing chinese clothing/gear???
Generally western nations at the time had an issue uniform and that's what a soldier wore... |

This was the head of the German military mission to China during the thirties. In addition to training a portion of Chiang Kai Shek's Chinese Nationalist army along modern German lines, he is said to have taken the field in Chinese uniform to lead troops during fighting against the Japanese, before being obliged to withdraw in order to respect the terms of the Tripartite Pact. However, this is one, very high ranking, prominent individual. Even as instructors at the small unit level I expect any German advisors to the Chinese would have worn their own uniforms. In any case, reenacting outside your ethnic group is entirely accepted provided you do so with accuracy, so there's nothing stopping you just straight up portraying a Chinese soldier of the period, should you choose. If you're talking about civilians in China who felt the need/desire/call to take up arms and enlist, that's a little different, I've seen a few documentaries where they've interviewed Europeans or North Americans who fought in the Chinese Civil War, and it wouldn't be hard to imagine they'd also fought in WWII. Of the people interviewed, most had fought on the side of the Red Chinese, though a few had fought for the KMT. Quote:
As an individual starting to assemble an impression from the 22nd Infantry Regiment, 24th Division, of the 32nd Army, let me tell you that the IJA is mostly made up of Chinese and White people, there are very few Japanese in it, outside of Japan. I'd say the only particularly "accurate" army in terms of race, would be the Soviet Red Army, WWII or otherwise, and that's only because of the ethnic diversity faced by a nation like the C.C.C.P. due to it's size and the regions it drew from. In short, be whatever you want to be for the purposes of re-enacting, just behave how you're expected to behave in character. This may not apply for the airsoft world as it really seems to be more of a period based skirmish or milsim with a side of re-enacting. Enjoy!

You will most likely are be stretching history a wee bit for your load out and background story but you do have options such as... 1) Anti-Bolshevik Russian that has fled to China and became either a volunteer with the KMT, a mercenary for a local warlord or a part of a collaborating force friendly with the Japanese occupying force in Manchuria etc. 2) Soviet NKVD operative on a border raid or former NKVD operative (fleeing due to a purge and switching teams)...either way you get to wear a Chinese KMT uniform. The above went on until the late 30's mostly but when the Soviets occupied places such as Manchuria in 1945 they arrested over 10,000 Russians living in Manchuria as "enemy collaborators” and sent them off to Siberia. Before 1945, there were at least 250,000 Russians living in China. So long story short, you can be a white boy and wear a Chinese civil war era army uniform. I think this is being over thought.
Make sure your gear is period correct. Make sure your weapon is period correct. Forget about your character sheet and back story.

You got me curious about White Russians in chinese service. I couldn't find anything about White Russians in the PLA (yet), but I've run into stories about White Russians in chinese service during the 30's. Also, White Russian bodyguard were popular to have in Shanghai during that period.
Have yet to find a standard equipment list from that era. I doubt there is one. |

Militaryphotos website has a few pics of white russian mercenaries in china. I think those pics are mostly from the 1920's though. Last edited by shiftsup; April 28th, 2013 at 23:33.. |
