Usually, you don't need everything to start an impression. Unless you're doing a "just-walked-out-of-Quartermasters office" or "jumped-right-out-of-the-plane", lots of gear got "lost" or just stayed behind during operations.
Get the uniform, helmet and belt/suspenders with a first aid kit, mag pouch and canteen and you'd be good to go for a basic infantry kit. PM sent

Hey RG,
Best of luck on your FSSF impression. It is one of my personal favorites. Post some pics of it even if it is a WIP. Paratrooper boots, wool shirt and wool pants do the job for a Cannon Company Forceman. I suppose you must have access to or own the Osprey book or The Supercommandos by RT Ross; excellent photo collection in that book, a few obvious errors and the weak copy editing that Schiffer publishing is known for but still very very good. My FSSF impression has changed quite a bit since I started. Picked up a war dated parka, yukon pack, d bale M1. If they ever make a Johnson LMG I am down for two. Again, best of luck. Your load out sounds awsome. I have both the books of which you speak, and they are quite dog eared from many many readings. It was actually the osprey book that gave me the idea for the 1942s- plate f1 shows a force an in a jacket. Werner says their is lots of photo evidence for them being worn in France, but I've never seen any but the afore mentioned Fredrick's.

RG, that's interesting. Never seen those pics. Wonder if the the identification is just a mistake and the guys in M42's really are 517 RCT.

I dunno. I have looked at many images, and have not seen any of the tell tail slanted pockets. I tried to post the plate, but my darn iPad won't do it. It's just a painting anyways. Part of the mystique of the forcemen for me is the fact that , although they were ver y professional when it cam to kicking ass, they also had that , I don't care what you think- were gonna do it- point of view.

I know the plate your talking about. I just figured it was a fantasy drawing since some 2nd Reg FSSF were selected as "Airborne Ready" for the Kiska Op and the artist took some freedoms with that info.
In Ken Joyce's Crimson Spearhead there is a pic of a bring-back FSSF M42 jacket. Never seen a pic of one worn that was obviously a M42 in the field besides Frederick's. As you know, the FSSF neighbours in Southern France were all pretty much all Airborne so acquiring a Parachutists Jacket isn't a stretch. |

That's a great book. I don't own it, but periodically go to my local nerd lair and ogle it up. It seems like a book for the hard core collector, with all the bagde mesurements. Just out of curiosity,( you seem to be really into it), do you have a real V42? I have a knock off, and it is just a shadow of the real thing.

I only have a replica V42. A real one is out of my reach. I don't know enough about real V42's to spot a fake. I generally stick to original period items that are sub $500. I picked up a pre D Day dated Mae West. That was pretty cool for me anyway.
Quite a few of the wwii enthusiasts around here have pretty good collections. Another good FSSF book is A War History of the North Americans 1942-1944. The Joyce book is pretty good. But it's definitely for the serious collector.
