Fully Charged Battery Voltages...

What voltage should a 9.6V 3000 mAH NiMH (large) battery be at when freshly charged?

I got an item from onlinebatterypacks.com and it was mislabeled as a 10.8V. It has eight cells and uncharged it was at 9.7 volts. After charging it was at 11.33v.

I e-mailed the guy at the site and he says it's ok, but I want to make sure.

me = paranoid.

That's normal, your battery is made to provide 9.6 Volts of power when under load (i.e. with a strong current beign pulled, such as 5 amperes, like an AEG motor). So it's normal to have higher voltage when the battery is 'resting'.

Eight cells of either NiCad or NI-MH will give 9.6 volts (8 X 1.2 volts), i would take 9 cells to have 10.8 volts.

Eight cells will be 9.6. the 9.7 and 11.33 you're seeing are the voltages the charger is supplying to it to charge it.

Actually I believe PoFF is correct. All my charged batteries (5-6 of em) indicate 1-2 volts higher than what they are rated at when at rest. The rated voltage is under load.

The 8 pcs battery pack is 8.6V actually. When you newly buy it and use it for the first time, you must charge it with normal charge, that is 0.1C charge. Like your 3000mah, you should chage it with 300ma for about 12 hours for the first time, then the life of your battery will be much longer. And though the nominal votage is 9.6V, but the actual votage a single cell after fresh charge will be about 1.4V. Then 1.4V*8=11.2 Then it will self discharge to 1.2V per cell.
