General Maintenance Practices

I have looked around and couldn't really find a direct answer on this. I have just purchased a TM AK47 and want to know how to take proper care of it. How often do i have to clean the barrel?
How often do i have to apply silicone oil and where do u have to apply it?
How often do i have to clean/regrease my mech box?
Are there any other maintenance pratices that are good?

Thanks

I clean my barrel after every day of play, after every few games if it's really dusty or dirty out. Simply swab out with a small cotten patch soaked in lightweight silicone oil - repeat until the patch comes out clean, and remember to turn your hopup OFF when cleaning the barrel.

I do a quick wipe all over with a cloth with a bit of silicone oil after every day of play to clean. I put one drop of lightweight silicone oil in the hopup before and after every game day.

I disassemble, clean, and regrease my guns at the end of the season when I'm storing them for the winter (we don't play outside between December and March in Winnipeg).

For AK's make sure to use blue locktite on all 3 of the screws in the stock - they have a tendency to drop out. It's always a good idea to keep a couple of spares handy - the size is M4 X 10mm and they cost about 28 cents each at Canadian Tire.

Also, the front site will eventually get wobby; fix that up with some teflon tape around the barrel under the front site. Then use blue locktite on the grub screw under the front site (it's under the fake cleaning rod).

Store it with your hop-up off.

After using it on full auto, before storing take a few shots on semi-auto. It's supposed to decompress the spring so it's not compressed for a long period of time.

yah, I do that also.

Using Motomaster Silicon Spray helps. I totally saturate my tightbore before and after each game. Compressed air around seams can help, especially if you played in the rain, youd be surprised how bad dirty water can be, almost as troublsome as dust.

Yes. You can get it from Gord at XT, or at Project RC on St. James St.

Page 2 of the FAQ.

In general, the less you do, the better. Quick swab of the barrel as previously advised. Leaving the mechbox alone as much as possible is preferable.

You can add a drop of silicone oil in the feeding tube, or in your mag. That's about it.

As Greylocks has already mentioned it's all discussed in the FAQ. You'll find it a valuable read that should put a lot of things into perspective.
