8.4v 1100mAh Battery "Crackling"

Well, was doing some mechbox repairs, and went to plug in the battery. A few little blue sparks flew, and the battery seemed dead (when it had been working 10 mins earlier). I plugged it into my charger, and it started making some crackling noise.

I promptly unplugged it from the charger, and after 10 mins the crackling noise subsided, but I'm afraid to plug it back into the charger.

Did I ruin my battery or what?

Even if it's not actually dead I would consider it dead. Take it to be recycled.

I would also have your charger checked If you have fuse on it it could have been blown.

The charger does my other batteries okay. I probably ruined the battery myself while doing the repairs, and made the situation worse by plugging it in.

Battery is going in the recycle pile.

Luckily I had 2 more on order....hopefully here next week!

It is probably just a bad contact.

Where where the sparks comming from?
Is there any signs of leak anywhere around the ends of the batteries.

Is there an inflated cell in the pack? (Look for negative side rounded)

The sparks came from the contact itself, where it connects with the gun/charger.

Nothing looks inflated.

Do you know something I don't?

I think what he's getting at is it's possible that you had a loose connection on the connectors and that current was arcing from the contact points that were loose. If it was only a short period of time, you may have only reduced the number of charge cycles on the pack.

I would still check the wiring for oxidation, burns and strange smells.

If you know of place in your town that can repack your pack, then break it open and inspect/test the cells individually. It usually costs 50cents to 1 dollar per cell to have it re-wrapped.

Sounds like the polarity is reversed. swap the leads and retry. If you can fit wires into your charger or the plug you can reverse the polarity just to check. It should respond as normal, then all you would need to do is swap the wires on you battery connector.

That is possible too, but if you have a intelligent / smart charger the charger will (should) not charge the pack if you have the wires wrong.

No matter though. While trying to pull the wires out of the connector, the wires became unsoldered at the battery end. There was some acid/melting inside. Oh well. Thanks for the help.

Acid is white powder.

If the thing you see is brownish, it is resin used to help soldering the wire there. It usually is cleaned after the job is done, but maybe you got a cheaped out pack...

Sorry to jump in on your thread,I had a similar problem with
3000 ni mh batt..I had it plugged it and 10minutes later
smoke was coming from it.After I retrieved it from the snow
bank,I hooked it up to a light and nothing happened.

Well, at least it wasn't an expensive battery pack and you defiantly learned something. This happened to me but I heard the noise as soon as I plugged the battery up. The charger was on but it would not let me select a charge method. You should talk to the person who sold you the pack if they wired it wrong. That is what happened to my fiend and why I had my experience when I tried charging it.

OMFG. So I got yet ANOTHER 8.4v 100mAh stick battery today. Plugged it into the charger...small spark, then light turns red and it starts "charging". About and hour and a half later, the light is green. Okay, battery is good to go. Plug it in, nothing.

Regular 8.4v large type batteries work. Unfortunately, the AK doesn't have the space for it, (I have the model with the folding stock).

The charger still charges my large batteries, but not the sticks. It didn't get hot, it didn't crackle, none of the cells exploded....WTF?


**The charger came with two extra fuses. I decided to check this out in case it was my problem. Can't find where the fuses go! In my anger and frustration, I opened the charger...there is no place to put a fuse***

Man, I am so pissed at Tenergy right now, it's not funny. That charger's ruined two brand new batteries.

Any advice?

Replace the charger.

Goto a local hobby store and ask them what they have for those RC cars and some of the electric planes. They cost 40-110 dollars.

Any of those would do, I have the minipeak cost me 60 dollars at a local hobby store, incredibly versatile. All of them can clip onto any power source.

Sorry, just reading through this, and realized I am talking about a 7.2v stick battery, not 8.4v.

It's easy to say "replace the charger", but why is it working for 8.4v Large batteries, but killing 7.2v sticks?

It's just weird.
