Hey guys, I've got a used gun that I'm about to paint, it's a little dirty, and I was wondering what's the best way to clean off the grease, dirt etc.. I was thinking of using rubbing alcohol but I was afraid of damaging the plastic.
Help please!

Dude just use some good soap. Rubbing alcohol may damage the paint but not the plastic itself.

I just painted my first gun a lot like your (squeenix). Its a Broxa just as a test but it turned out ok. Whatcha guys think?

You need to drybrush to accent with a darker colour.

The issue with spray on low quality plastic is that it gives a flat, one piece appearance.

You need to give the look of spaces and lines, like where the upper receiver meets the handguard, where the two receiver halves meet, etc.

Give it a shot, you won't regret it.

That being said, it's much better than squeenix's. Surprise, surprise.

Toasties is right. If you wanna make your gun look less flat, Give drybrushing a try.

(The only metal on this gun is the front sight and the stock. along with that little loop thing on the magwell)

I was bored one night with my warhammer paints and decided to drybrush one of my metal paints over the black spraypaint job I had done on the weapon earlier. Turned out to be a nice aged metal look. Doesn't go well with the green furnature but it was pretty cool. I had sold the gun just recently and the new owner is pretty damn happy with it. I plan on doing this with my other clearshit guns in the future.

If anything, Go into an artists/hobby shop and find a color that is simular to the tan you had applied, i'd suggest something darker if anything. get a small bottle, fill it up with paint and water it down a little 'til it has a milky consistancy and find something like an old ceramic tile. Dab a bit of paint on that and put the brush in, then find a clean spot on the tile and dab the paint on your brush on that 'til there is a very light application of paint left on the bristles of the brush.

Quickly and lightly, rub over any of the detailed areas of the gun and it'll apply what little paint there is on the bristles over the raised areas. A lot of hobbiest plane/tank painters use this technique to 'weather' models and miniatures. Don't see why it cant be done on guns

Though, Keep in mind there are many effects you can acheive with this method. When I did the gun I applied a lot to give it that long weathered look. If you want to make it look like its been dirtied or bumped up a bit, apply less, but apply it more precisely on areas that would gain wear from the enviroment.

... It was a fun thing to do? I did this just as an experiment, not a means to shade my shame of it being plastic.

Good luck! Find something to practice on first because it can be quite tricky to gauge how much to apply and etc.

I think he had the right idea. Maybe a little drybrush-heavy, but it's better than a flat, one-piece, plastic look.

I would personally do several layers of metallic paint with a protective finish, then a relatively thin layer of black paint, then let natural wear do its job.
