JG M4 mechbox

Just opened up the mechbox to look into a problem I'm having.

It was quite obvious that the plastic teeth/notches on the piston have been wore down to the point where they aren't really catching....making the piston stop dead in its tracks. (attached).

Can anyone recommend a cost effective solution to a new piston (with new head) with stronger teeth for my JG mechbox?

At airsoftparts.ca they do have some modify pistons for about $20 and piston heads for $15.

I suppose you could also attempt to source something from the classifieds.

Alternatively if you have the patience to wait for something from out of country you could try this :

I cannot attest to its quality but its a piston and piston head, and its made by the same company as the rest of your mechbox and AEG.

-Edit: sorry it seems as if that item is either out of stock or discontinued.

This is a pretty simple problem to solve, however choosing the right piston is very important here.

Modify Polycarbonate pistons are very good at absorbing shock. However the material of polycarbonate itself is quite hard and not very flexible compared to other plastics. This in turn causes pre-mature wear of the teeth much faster due to it's nature of being easily scratched. Installing a Polycarbonate piston here would mean another piston failure in the near future.

Now on the topic of solution, there are high quality pistons made of very soft materials. The cheapest product with the most value/quality would be the TM piston. They are very soft and unlikely to have pre-mature wear on the piston over time.

Good luck.

Great advice guys, thanks...one more question:

Do I have to be picky about which brand of piston I have to get if I don't go with the JG replacement part. IE Madbul, Modify, etc will all fit nicely in this mechbox?

All pistons are 100% cross compatible between same version mechbox shells. I've never seen a piston not fit correctly or performe poorly due to brand tolerance issues.

No worries about that

modify ultra piston (high speed version) needs the 2nd and 3rd tooth filed down a bit so the sector gear teeth can clear it, also the ridges on the side of the piston need slight filing depending on which mechbox (mine was a G&P)
