Star/ares hk sl-9
Currently I own an ICS M4 Carbine and looking to change to this fancy looking gun.
For some reason I just have such a Hardon for it. Couple people keep saying "thats gonna be a pain in the ass for CQB" As far as I know...I dont run up 2 inch`s near my enemy and start unloading...So having a longer rifle isnt an issue and is preffered by myself. My question is, Has anybody tried these? Reliability? The guy at Velocity Arms said STAR has been discontinued and now runs under the name ARES...kinda confused but okay. So Are there any problems with this thing? Anyone here have one? Maybe I could try it out a bit before I get one. Thanks! http://shop.ehobbyasia.com/aeg/star-...rsoft-aeg.html

It's a long G36 that's pretty much it... Held the ARES not bad strong durable plastic or whatever the fancy name is for it.
If you're going for a long rifle I really do suggest you get something else, that has parts readily available. A lot of people have SL8/9's on ASC but most if not all only gamed em once or twice and left as a wall hanger. Also with the pain in the ass for CQB thing, you could always switch out the foregrip/barrel with any G36 variant to change the length. Last edited by sushicake; January 5th, 2011 at 05:08.. |

I had numerous G36s in various lengths over time.
The SL8/SL9 is not any longer than a full sized G36. Barrel length is the same and overall length is also the same with the stock open. I never fold my stock on my rifles, so it's not that bad. Other than the upper and lower receiver, every other part is G36 compatible. So you can install a free-float G36 RIS with a large silencer if that is what you want. It also takes regular G36 mags as well as the small 20rnds mags. You can also install a M4 mag adapter just like on any other G36. Good luck finding one. Last time I saw one pass it sold for 700$ with no mags and no upgrades. Star/Ares quality is up there at the top for G36s in my opinion. Way better than even CA which is what everyone seems to be crazy about. I personally had a Star G36K in the past and nothing beats that one in quality. If you want to build it to a marksman rifle, it is easy to do so. Mechbox is version 3 and takes all standard parts. It is also a lot sturdier than a V2 that is used in M4s/M16s. Takedown is not that different from any G36. You have to first remove the magwell pin and the magwell. Then remove the rear pin/screw (I don't remember what was used on the Star) and then the upper can be removed. Problem with this gun is the battery space. Even if it has a large stock, it is completely full with the adjustment mechanism. You must use a small 9.6v mini pack or a small LiPo pack. |

My G36 is currently a conglomeration of the CA G36 front end, STAR SL-8 rail, and the STAR SL-9 body.
Overall I like the style. It's something unique, not seen too much, and being a G36 is lightweight for my scrawy little arms. I have no idea if the ARES SL8/9 is made out of the same build material as the conversion kit, but if it is, the CA body is definitely better.

I can't remember exactly which website I saw it on (evike, airsoft g.i. etc...) but they have the kits available for a couple hundred bucks online to turn a g36 variant into an SL9! One piece stock/grip, split upper rail, front end and everything else you need to convert it over! I was actually thinking of doing it to my G36C because at least if you do the conversion you still have the option of going full auto if you need to as, if I'm not mistaken, all the SL9's I've seen are semi-auto only but don't quote me on that!!

Last few CAs I handled where really disappointing. Maybe I was unlucky, but the last one was not even aligned properly. The handguard was stopping about 1/4" before the molding of the receiver and the finish was nothing special.
The Star one on the other hand had a very high percentage of nylon in the plastic compound and was rigid as hell. Even the slight greenish tint that the real G36s have. I don't know about the conversion kits though. As for ARES, I think the quality of their stuff is lower than what Star used to be. I ordered a replacement hop-up unit and it was really cheap, no where like the one I had in my Star rifle back then. You cannot order a conversion kit online from outside Canada, it includes a receiver and will be seized at customs. And no, you cannot install the stock on a regular G36 receiver. All SL8/9 are full auto. The marking is not present on the receiver and the selector won't click in place, but it can be pushed to the auto position anyways. Difference between the SL-8 and SL-9 is in RS. The SL-9 is the civilian version, sporting a different trigger group, handguard and top rail. The airsoft version has a weird handguard that can be replaced with any G36 part. The top rail is an extended rail that goes up to the end of the handguard with iron sights while the SL-8 have the regular G36C rail with no iron sights. If you are looking for a DMR, the SL-8 is a very good idea. It can be upgraded very easily and have a unique look. The SL-8SD version is simply fitted with a G36K handguard and barrel, plus a long silencer. |

I haven't handled a STAR G36, and my CA one is about 4 years old now, so I'm not sure about their new stuff. The STAR conversion kit is definitely ABS though. Maybe it's made out of a different stuff than their actual rifles (this would probably stand to reason since it's designed for an ABS TM G36c).

Thanks for all the Info!! I know theres a kit to convert the G36 into a SL-8/9 but... It looked wonky...
Exactly! most of the internals are the same as the G36 So I doubt id have a problem with that. Getting my hands on one is the hard part though! Theyre all sold out and STAR is apparently Discontinued. I can get a SL9 for roughly 450 shipped. I just really love the look of the thing. Either that or a M16 Vietnam style....but thats FREAKIN long Quote:

How is it longer.. M16 VN is a tad shorter compared from a SL9. Comparing to a G&P M16 VN 988mm and STAR SL9 1030mm in length.
