It's all about the gearing and load on the motor. I've seen 600mah mini batteries pull an M120 with Systema Torque-Up gears, so 2400mah should last you all day. I can run 7000+ rounds with an M130 (418 fps) and a 2400mah battery, I've done it.

The motor may be exceeding it's limit for effective use of current, but I doubt it. I would look at the rolling resistance of your gears again as well as free movement of the piston.
