Finally got this damn thing off. It seems that when they powdercoated the barrel, they did it with the barrel end in place, and the powder coat material fused the end onto the barrel.
Took some serious reefing, and the barrel end is now toast, but the barrel itself is almost unscathed...a little touch-up paint and she'll be fine.
