I know you're trying to minimize the amount of depth your backing will remove from your limited range, but I use a cardboard box filled with empty plastic water bottles. The BBs have never pierced the bottles and all end up in the bottom of the box, so once the box is all shredded up, I just toss the BBs and throw the box in the recycling bin. Plastic bottles can be reused again. If you drink lots of bottled water like my roommate at the time did, then you will never have a shortage of bottles.
