Batteries die. Real compasses and maps work wonderfully and don't cost $699 (though my iphone was only $200) Even though it's protected I'd hate to drop in in a swamp or creek and test that case lol.
FRS/GMRS radios also work great for comms. Cheaper and don't rely on cell towers to communicate.
