I don't know the guy personally, but I think this is a good way to think outside the box.
A ref don't really have powers. It's just a neutral pair of eyes on the field. When in doupts, he cut the deal.
TNB being a ref would put him in a situation to observe and think while still keeping him in the game. He would learn a lot from it IMO.
That's what I call a win-win situation. Unless he screw this up too.
