Mysterious stuff in barrel

Hello all

Sooo Alex (le Chef) buys this m16, that appears to shoot each BB in a new direction each time, in a complete random fashion and with a consistant zero precision. ('grouping' is about 3m at 2m range, lol)
it's fun to watch but that doesn't make a good AEG.

So he takes his barrel out, takes a look inside, the barrel appears to be filled with a strange wiry white substance like a ball of hair that sticks to the metal, disturbing the BBs trajectory.

Later at my place, I take a RS cleaning rod with a metal brush and proceed to remove all this substance. At first I though it was some coating inside the barrel, but it appears to be only covering a few inches before the muzzle end.
Still it takes me a few minute to remove everything.
It's grey, plastic-y, translucent and it looks like a (ex) coat of glue.

soooo does anyone have any idea what it was? :)
did we remove some hitech anti-precision coating ? or maybe was it some high quality lube that transforms into glue after a while?

Anyway, I'll keep you guys posted about the results when the barrel is back in the AEG.

let me guess.. its a china made AEG?

they grease the gear boxes so much.. they it gets secreted into the barrel.

My JLS scar had the same stuff. but it was dark brown.

....w...t...f...?

I've never, EVER seen anything like that before... Should've taken pics of it when ya took it out.. lol

Jimski March 3rd, 2008 10:57

LOLZer!
that's what I thought: something projected thru the mechbox in the barrel.
yes It's a previous-gen china AEG.

I still have the 'thing' on the cleaning rod, I'll take a pic if I can :)

Sounds like it may be some after-market tightbore with an inner coating of some kind. I haven't had any experience with them myself, but I remember reading about issues people had with the coating (be it teflon or other) peeling from the inside of their barrels. This could be what you're experiencing.

It did look like some coating falling apart, but I still think it was non-factory-planned-coating :)

maybe somebody at the factory decided to give it a good loving good bye well before your friend got it Lol

AWW!! Sure hope not, I was thinking that tho.

Teflon Tape is typically white and rather frail stuff. Maybe some doorknob decided to 'pimp up the barrel' the ghetto way.

I'd say it's either mechbox puke or teflon spray

Jimski March 3rd, 2008 11:32

yeh, I noticed that once cleaned, this barrel is really un-tightbore, there's like 1 mm of space all around the BB :)
maybe that's what the coating was for, lol.

AngelusNex March 3rd, 2008 11:33

well crappy accuracy is better than no accuracy

Danke March 3rd, 2008 12:29

Haven't some folks comment that the typical Canadian Tire type cheap BB's will leave residue in the barrel?

Maybe the previous owner was that kind of person.

Alex Le Chef March 3rd, 2008 12:45

the aeg is and ICs no clue about the barel

Jimski March 3rd, 2008 12:56

lol forgot about that, ICS.

You were gentle with that brush, right? RS cleaning equipment can easily damage airsoft parts, what with airsoft barrel usually being brass or aluminium rather than steel.

I'm inclined to share Danke's suspicion about this being cheap BB residue.
