AEG RC Helicopter.
I'm rapid prototyping a mounting bracket to add an AEG gearbox to the underside of my RC helicopter.
What I'm wanting from you are suggestions of what gearbox to purchase. I need the lightest and most compact full auto gearbox I can find. It doesn't have to be super quality and the smaller the batteries I can use, the less weight ill have to contend with. Any ideas? Thanks. |
AEP clone?

I would probably use a P90 v6 gearbox.. it's compact and gravity assist fed... The second choice might be v7/m14... but it's a lot heavier. |
id also say an aep is prolly yer only option. They are light enough to not cailuse too much issue with a larger sized chopper and you could likey invert it to use a hopper type design for ammo as opposed to the low cap spring mags they use out of the box. Would be prety neat to have an "uav" witu a cammera( thays been done) as well as some fire power.
you may also look into the RC tanks that shoot airsoft bb's and see what they are useing in those to shoot tue bbs with. or another thing that may work would be just to have a small container that you could remotely open to just dump bbs out of like a bomber. Use some heavier ammo like .40's and even from a lower height they will feel the impact and if the delivery system had a small enough opening like a lil door that becomes a small ramp you could sort of stream the bbs out in a line to cover a larger area with them. good luck with yer idea! |
how much does an m203 and 40mm co2 shell weigh?
|
way too much unless you buy one of those 1000 doller plus multi prop choppers like u see in the pic with the subaru above. Technically you wouldnt need the m203 just the shell and some way to strike the valve but stull they are heavy. The weight of a gbb pistol lol

In this particular case you might want to look at some plastic electric pistols that most people avoid buying in canadian tire and walmart. Lightwieght and compactusually runs on AA batteries, you will just suffer with quality and replacement parts.

one of the little plastic LPEGs from wallmart is all I can really imagine an RC helicopter carrying and still being able to manoever
*edit maxxa beat me to it! darn |
I think anything short of that camera copter won't really work... the footage from the camera still requires a lot of post production image stabilization, on top of that 3 axis gimble and fancy camera already doing a lot of stabilization. Keeping something on target at rang would be super difficult.

their website and footage if you want to see how shakey it is... that's not a cheap camera they're dangling either.

Probably the best avenue would be to use a clearsoft to have the weight as low as possible like here :

Well I had in mind magazine fed, and I suppose one of those Canadian Tire mini-style airsoft guns would do. I was just hoping for less troubleshooting. My chopper is an old Ikarus Eco 8, upgraded with carbon fibre frame, brushless motor, and more modern main blades. I'd guess it could comfortably lift maybe 3/4lb? It shows very little reduction in performance with my GoPro.

S&T Polycarbonate gearbox for their Tavor !

Did you consider using a nbb co2 system too?
Could be interesting to compare the weight of both possibilities. |
I'd suggest something along the lines of a crappy walmart clearsoft gun. I know it's blasphemy to even buy one of those but their gear boxes are usually clear plastic with plastic gears which cuts the weight by alot and some models even use low end RC motors for toy RC cars. Which also drastically reduces the weight of the gearbox.
|
Walmart mini aeg those tinny aug guns 30$ full auto.
|
Yah, I suppose I'll try clearsoft if I can find one that feeds via magazine. It'd be inexpensive, I just hoped for something if higher quality.
|
This is an extremely bad idea. You wont be able to do anything with a coaxial heli. At a minimum you will be looking at a 450 class heli to lift any weight. These aren't toys and are far more dangerous than airsoft will ever be. It's hard enough to concentrate on keeping them flying but trying to mow someone down with bb's is ludicrous. The spinning blades on these things will cut through you like butter, break bones and possibly kill.
|
If you must mount an aeg on something flying than do it on a multirotor. It will be more stable and easier to fly and you can mount an fpv cam.
http://youtu.be/9bkKsjfOoto Oh and there is nothing regulating the number of rotors on RC aircraft. 3, 4, 6 or 8 rotors... Knock yourself out. |
r/c heli gun
sweet mod up..:) how about an electric pistol internal? would that be small/light enough?
|
if you build it to game, expect it to be shot at. ;)
|
I was thinking that the entire time. I don't care about airsoft versions of surveillance UAVs, they're just cool and I like the idea of having to stealth away from eyes in the sky. Mount a gun on one and it becomes a target.. that can't feel it and call itself out when it gets hit.
|
Yeah I hope this isn't an idea for a game-able UAV. I wouldn't attend a game with some kind of armed UAV was at that I couldn't fire back at.
If you're a multi-rotor enthusiast and you have the weight capacity, then you could design a type of shield with impact sensors on it. That way you could detect hits and allow people to shoot back at it. I've also seen protective "cages" that surround the rotors on multi-rotor RC's to protect the blades. These would also protect players from getting cut. |
No, no gaming for this lil blender. Just a creativity exercise and to fart around with in the back yard.
Once I select an action to mod and mount, I'll post screenies or maybe link you o my RC Groups forum topic. A friend in Wisconsin mounted a Ruger 10/22 action with 2" barrel and 10rnd magazine to his .60 size nitro chopper. The thing handled like a whale and liked to go backwards when fired, despite the attitude hold gyro. He flew it around in his barn in the middle of nowhere. Once again, just a fun exercise. We're I I do one for game, I'd be sure to make it known that return fire is welcome and expected. That won't be the case unless I get this fun one built and tweaked. |
