Noob questions rd. 2: the cheapskatening

Alright, so I did a bit more lurking and saw a post in the general guns discussion claiming that a decent starter gun for a beginner should cost around $400.

FOUR HUNDRED? Really?

This has gotten me curious, though! Veterans, how much was your first gun, as your initial purchase for serious airsoft? I imagine no one shelled out for a $500 CA straight away...

How much was it with all the aftermarket upgrades you made down the line?

Thanks!

Disco_Dante July 10th, 2010 00:35

$300 TM mp5k

Skruface July 10th, 2010 00:38

$670 for an all-plastic Tokyo Marui AK47 with no accessories...back in 1998? I still have it, and it still runs like a champ 150K+ rounds later - I've only ever opened the mechbox once, many years ago, and installed about $200 worth of performance parts, including a tightbore barrel. Don't think you can say that about too many Chinese cloned guns....

A decent, used gun will cost you $400, or thereabouts. A new one is closer to $500-$600, depending on brand and model. Of course, I'm only speaking about quality guns (TM, G&P, STAR/ARES, VFC). If you're looking at overseas/US prices for CYMA or Kalash/D-Boys guns, multiply them by X2.5 or X3 and you'll be in the ballpark of what you'll pay in Canada. That $150 CYMA gun will cost you $400 here....

FWIW, I have half a dozen guns that were over $1K each to build.

Were they worth it? That depends on how you look at it; I bought only top-of-the-line parts, learned to build guns properly from a number of individuals, and I know that when I go out to the field, my guns will fire accurately every single time I pull the trigger. Reliability is worth it's weight in gold to me.

Forever_kaos July 10th, 2010 00:44

$700-800 on my AK when all was said and done.

You can totally buy something cheaper, I had a Dboys AKS-74 I bought for $350 shipped, I switched out the hopup rubber ($10) and she was golden.
I regret selling her that's for sure.

All depends what you are looking for. Treat it well and it should do the same.

fi3re July 10th, 2010 00:44

400 for a TM MP5k pdw with a crapload of good accessories.

If you're patient and willing to spend some time fishing around you can get very good deals.

J-Man19 July 10th, 2010 00:53

$350 stock TM commando back in....2005

GBear July 10th, 2010 00:54

$600+ on my VFC SCAR-L

skalnok July 10th, 2010 00:56

600 on a stock CA g36k (Prometheus barrel ) and then 900 on a fully upgraded CA g36.

so youre right i never spent 500 on a brand new CA :P i spent more.

Thenooblord July 10th, 2010 00:57

$30 walmart springer ;p
I would have gotten something better, BUT I still lived with my parents back then, and my dad didn't like guns, so I had to slowly move up to more realistic guns, starting with clear shitsoft

my first real gun was an Echo1 G36C for $225, that thing was great

L473ncy July 10th, 2010 00:58

About $550 once the smoke cleared. However I went the buy a "decent" gun first route (nothing like cheapo JG's back in the day but more similar to something of slightly higher quality but definitely not CA or TM or anything like that) and it's still going strong.

ratnest July 10th, 2010 00:58

300 for a jg, plus another 150for optics, sights and a front end.

Doc July 10th, 2010 02:52

$600 - TM M14 Socom, back about 4 years ago when they first came out, opened the gearbox once to replace a tappet plate (v7, pain in the ass), sold it about 2 years ago for almost the same amount of $ :)

Slow July 10th, 2010 02:53

$400 g&g mp5-a5
Then spent another $60 to get the piston replace and to figure out why Trigger Assembly wasn't working.

burningashes July 10th, 2010 05:14

$300 Classic Army Sportline M4.

Daiviet July 10th, 2010 07:04

$450, Toyko Marui P90. Don't buy cheap shit to begin with. Buy cheap, buy twice.

HauntedTank July 10th, 2010 08:33

CYMA M1A1 Thompson $350

Tank

Rock 'N' Roll Outlaw July 10th, 2010 08:58

First airsoft gun I bought was a WE HiCapa for about $200, obviously wasn't game worthy so I bought my first AEG which was a Tokyo Marui P90 for about $700, package came loaded with mags and whatnot.

Tankdude July 10th, 2010 09:12

500$ TM AUG from Rangers airsoft.

DarKnite July 10th, 2010 09:30

250 on Wells m4. I've had it almost one years no problems no upgrades, still shoots 360. I just recently baught a src Gen 3 m4 and i still use the Wells to bring my buddies to airsoft games.

iballBRODY July 10th, 2010 09:33

180 for my jg sig552-used

HeadlessChicken July 10th, 2010 09:39

Just over $600 for me for a Classic Army G36.

sewktbk July 10th, 2010 09:44

200$ US for a WE 1911 full metal
600$ for a WE PDW

without counting the accessories and shananigans....

R.I.T.Z July 10th, 2010 09:48

300 ish on my jg m4 s-system
450 Dboys AK74
900 B.C.R

Amos July 10th, 2010 10:22

350 for a completely broken to shit TM M16VN... by the time it was running it was about 550

Strelok July 10th, 2010 11:28

760 on a Classic army m24. Loved that thing.

teriases July 10th, 2010 11:29

$600+

VFC SCAR-CQB

But you can get away with an MP5 under $400.

Flesterage July 10th, 2010 11:36

About 800$ for my VFC SR-16.

TokyoSeven July 11th, 2010 23:23

TokyoMarui M4 RIS with 2 batteries, charger and 6 magazines for $700.00ish
KSC G18 with an additional magazine $400.00

Total of $1100 of on my first airsoft gun purchase.

Voice of Reason July 11th, 2010 23:25

$500, TM Thompson with 3 mags, BB's, and Batteries. Go big or go home.
Later on....$650 Classic army M16a4. it has been my work horse. fantasitc battle rifle.

Edit: Technicaly the M16 was a gift. but thats what its value was at the time.

venture July 11th, 2010 23:34

$25 or 30 from CT - piece of shit never lasted
$65 from CT - ditto
$?? (I don't remeber it was one of those clear mini MP5's) from CT - ditto
$350 for TM MP5K PDW used, rental gun; who knows the atrocities it had seen. That was over 5 years ago and I still have it, still works great!

....So I guess the answer to your question is "yes virginia, there is quality airsoft, but you must pay for it. Airsoft is one of the greatest examples of "you get what you pay for" .

Mitchell12 July 11th, 2010 23:37

Too much.

Eeyore July 11th, 2010 23:45

$520 for a used TM G3 SG-1 with Systema internals and a tightbore barrel, 3 mid-caps, a rds and mount, a bag of shit .20s and a 3300 mah battery. My suggestion to you is to wait until you are 18, get av'ed and shop around in the classifieds. My friend wanted in and through shopping in the classifieds I found him a used G&G M4 for $190. Then he found 5 used mags for $45. If you are patient you can find really good deals

Cheesevillage July 11th, 2010 23:53

I bought one of those clear mini augs from CT, then a TM M9 silver springer, then a TM MP5A4 ($450).

The mp5 was my primary up until a month ago when it was traded away.

Rooster July 12th, 2010 00:49

HAHA!

That is awesome.

To the original poster; Don't mistake the word cheap for affordable. There are more affordable options for sure.

Myself for instance, I went with a Kraken AK-47. Affordable but decent. I had to invest $50 in a sim job, regrease and downgrade of the spring. It runs like a champ. But do realize you will be out gunned. The $500-600 guns will have better builds, better range, better accuracy. But it only makes you play harder IMO. You have to be closer, and have a better shot.

Couldn't have said it better myself. My first (and currently only) AEG wasn't an OMGWTFBBQ $800 gun but rather it was something that at the time I found to be affordable and considering my options and avenues of what I could get probably one of the better decisions that I could make in regards to buying a gun. It wasn't the cheapest of the cheap and certainly not a higher grade rifle. It was in the middle and closer to the cheaper/more affordable side for being a student on a budget.

With a Kraken it's; buy it, open it up and put another $50 or so into it and play with it until something else breaks and you replace that. Certainly not an option that a lot of people would promote but definitely something you could do if you'd rather meter out money over time (ie. the difference between buying a cheap/beater car and paying maintenance costs more often or buying something like a Corolla or Tercel (higher initial cost) that will work but you still have to do some/less regular maintenance).

NRN_R_Sumo1 July 12th, 2010 01:14

1 dollar, semi-auto spring pistol from the dollar store, bought several
Terrible little things but were fun for a prank, guessing under 100 fps with .12's..

Recently though
bought 3 Krakens for 100 each, two of them are for other people (each adds about 30 bucks in taxes and shipping so 130x3=390)
ASR for 110 on sale, then with shipping, .43 bbs, border fees ect cost me around 180.
co2 pistol for about 80.

...sooo effectively I've managed to spend more than some of these people on their first real guns, but in the form of a small armory.

Cobrajr122 July 12th, 2010 10:50

My first rifle was $950, full metal TM G3A3 with wood stock/foregrip (real steel) and 6 metal mags, all the plastic parts, battery. I have put roughly another $250 into this rifle with internals and new batteries and one metal part that was still plastic.

Zeonprime July 12th, 2010 11:16

2003
First new Pistol $280
First used AEG (M4) $550
First new AEG (P90) $480

Thanh July 12th, 2010 12:06

First AEG TM M4A1 RIS back in 2004 paid about $600 for it. Didnt really upgrade it.
GBB M9 Berreta ABS Plastic paid $200 bucks used.

Short Round July 12th, 2010 12:17

Upgraded KS P90 = $445

I'm just getting my first gun after being on here for a year almost.

Don't forget about everything else like the loadout, etc. That could be just as expensive.

My advice, the cheapest good quality gun I can think of that comes to mind is priced usually at $300 plus shipping.

You can also cheapout and get cheap Sig 552's, I saw two people had at Green Zone, but you stand out alot if it isn't painted and performs low.

This hobby isn't cheap sadly if you lived in asia though, that would be a different story

Baows July 12th, 2010 12:34

KWA 1911 ($240) Awesome gun, just gamed it.

SRC Gen III M4 ($450)
- Metal Body ($200)
- Prometheus Barrel ($80)
- EOTech/ACOG ($130)
- 3600 mAh battery ($80)
- Upgraded fullstock ($50)
- 5 midcaps ($10 ea/$50)

My SRC Gen III is what I currently use, and I love it. The $1000 I'm into it for was well worth the money, it's a gem!

I've also got an SRC M933 ($200) and a KJW Beretta M9 ($230ish).

Reckless July 17th, 2010 15:31

Airsoft is actually one of my cheapest hobbies...

my other 2 were/are - Automotive racing and Radio control (racing cars, now scale boats mostly military and tugs)

I'm a bad one to comment on prices simply because I purposely buy broken/non working guns, either for resale or because I refuse to leave anything stock(or normal) to begin with and had full plans to replace it's guts anyways ;)

the deals are there, if your ready and prepared to jump on it right away.

deep in the bush July 17th, 2010 16:18

670 for my first AEG.

a thousand years ago now.

Foxer2373 January 3rd, 2012 17:16

HAHA just saw this old thread had to resurect with my first gun TM M14 $700 upgraded now $1200 fully upgraded into a DMR, and followed by my first side arm TM MK23 $320 now $500 pdi barrel, new hopup and couple mags.

Actually my newest guns are my cheapest because im making them projects.... DE multi shot shotgun/10 shells 100$ (rare full stock) upgraded with barrel attached police shogun tac light now $200, Echo 1 ASR $120 in the prosess of soaking stupid money into a clone on a risk to get a great rifle out of it by end of the week when parts show up $700 Been an expensive first year. this is just guns never mind the gear/claymore/thunder B's/gas nades

TaroBear January 3rd, 2012 17:29

The guns? They're expensive. But the stuff that goes with them costs more. I started out with a P90 (about 500, I think), and now use SIG rifles. Fake bullets cost extra dough. I'm really jealous of those 10 packs of AR mags people get for pocket change. Back then, I had to cough up tons of dough just for single P90 pouches. Nowadays, the accessories still cost me more, but only because I have odd taste. I have an RE pistol sitting on my desk that I've only brought to one game and didn't fire. Bought because I'm a fanboy. I have a shotgun where the stock cost almost as much as the gun itself, clocking in near the $700 mark. Then I had to get the gear to game with it. Now I've got another AEG that only uses drums. More new pouches. My other rifle is out of commission right now, but I bought another shotgun just to cut up and mount underneath it. Then I had to get rails for it.

My workhorse pistol, I can't even bear the thought of leaving stock anymore, so that's getting up to the 1 K mark, last time I checked. Still, I feel underequipped compared to most people at games, who have more value in attachments than I do in actual guns.

Sportco January 3rd, 2012 17:33

325$ ICS M4a1 plastic (2009)
One piston and one contact switch later
I'm still using it.... About 250000 bb's

EXCELLENT gun, shouldn't have sold it.

That's what I keep telling myself! I always tell myself the next gun I'll pick up is a P-90 again. I somehow never get around to it.

surebet January 3rd, 2012 17:54

TM SR16 in 2004 for something like 700$.

50k$ in since then, about 42 or 43k$ out as well. I buy and trade a lot.

THe_Silencer January 3rd, 2012 18:10

You can easily find a decent aeg for $300 or so on the classifieds. I Paid about $350 a few years ago for a JG G36C. Very nice gun.

dutch13 January 3rd, 2012 18:17

Tm mp5 ras - $600
Ca m15a4 with grenade launcher - $900
Kj 226 - $300
All back in 2003.

Padkiller January 3rd, 2012 18:18

700 on my WE M16 GBBR!

By the way, it's a bad idea to start with GBBR, because you'll get addicted to it!

Death March January 3rd, 2012 18:36

My first AEG was a ICS M4,paid $600.00 back in 2005 and I still have it with better parts now and stopped spending when it hit $2200.00 mark. Now it just sits and I use my PTW,sice 2007.

ThunderCactus January 3rd, 2012 18:54

first gun ever - CA G36K, $650
used marui G3-SG1, about $900 after upgrades, mags, and metal receiver
G&G UMG, like $500 or something
G&P M4 RASII, $600, put like $2000 into that rifle, magpul everything M203, LiPo upgrade, only thing left stock was a few body pins, half the outer barrel and the mechbox shell
G&P M249 para, won't tell you what I paid but they were $1800 back then. I've put about $900 into it now with internals, spare box, LiPo upgrade etc.
HFC beretta, I got for free for helping out a retailer
HFC Cougar, $300, just bought it to try it out
marui VSR-10, actually one of the less expensive guns I've owned at only $800 for everything
marui MEU, oh god like $900
WE PDW open bolt, $1000 or so
KSC glock 19, $300

And my PTW is still being built...
I've also bought 5 or 6 AEG's over time from $200 to $400 just to fix up and sell

Fact is, if you really like airsoft and think you'll be playing a long time, save up and buy something GOOD that's compatible with aftermarket internals and externals. You buy a $200 plastic gun, it's more expensive to upgrade to metal than buying a whole new metal gun, it may not be compatible with most externals, etc etc.
It's just better to buy mainstream guns.
Oh and AEGs are less expensive now than the first 3 years that I started, there's WAY more selection, and more than just 2 good brands
One year the only thing you could get was chinese crap, the year after you could only get clear receiver crap, now almost everything is available.
You noobs got it EASY these days.

Ozone06 January 3rd, 2012 18:58

TM M4 S-system $500 Bone stock and works like a champ every time.

My VFC scar-l... she can be a real bitch, I've gotta get around to rewiring her.

edit:

My First airsoft was a TM.. I think springer it was a 1911 but the barrel had 10MM on it insteadh of .45 ACP I picked up for 500 Pesos (15ish CAD) at a hole in the wall shop in Dumagette in the Philippines in 1999

5kull January 3rd, 2012 20:02

$450 ics m4 ris.

ThunderCactus January 3rd, 2012 21:32

Oh I guess it's worth mentioning, they didn't even HAVE $200 chinese clones 4+ years ago, so either you bought a used or $500 AEG or you didn't play lol

Curo January 3rd, 2012 23:35

My first gun was bought used for around 350 a CA SCAR-L pro 2nd gun? 700 dollar magpul PTS masada. The pennies do count.

Freeze January 4th, 2012 00:00

$400 for my JG G36C
$75 for a 551 Holographic Sight
$200 for a WE Hi-Capa 4.3

for a "Canada legal" gun, you have to keep in mind that you should downgrade ASAP to about 350fps so that it is fieldable at 90% of games. And doesn't break down as fast.
$10 for spring
$__if you want to pay someone to do it, zero to do so yourself.

ThunderCactus January 4th, 2012 00:11

With sorbo tech and advanced piston designs now, the issue of higher FPS=lower durability is totally gone. Only reason to go under 350fps now is if you use your gun inside and out, or if you're using stock parts lol

Prometheus or system(not systemA) super core piston, prometheus gears, sorbo cylinder head. You can run 1500rpm at 380fps and 100,000 rounds later the piston rack still looks like new.

And the whole mentality of the "sacrificial part", usually the piston, is completely gone now. It was necessary back when nothing was reliable, but I've seen more broken bevels and pinion gears caused pistons breaking and jamming the sector gear than anything else.

Freeze January 4th, 2012 00:44

LOL seriously? So I CAN have something that will have a 5% chance of breaking as opposed to a 50% like my stock pieces of crap?
Altho....the cost for that setup is high in terms of parts cost. I mean...
$40+ for the piston
$100+ for the gear set
$50+ for the cylinder head
Throw in shipping and handling, and that's a whole lotta money.
Then if you can't do it yourself, you have to hire a tech who can! Then that's another $50....

Slow January 4th, 2012 00:56

First gun was..$400(G&G MP5-A5) ish. After a month it was broken and that was another $100 to get it fixed. This was between getting 2 different gun techs to fix it(Amos and Gun tech from Local Airsoft Store). Yup! This is expensive but, we love what we do.

Short Round January 4th, 2012 01:47

$450 for a gun that stop working after a week of purchasing, a year later and at least $400+ in upgrades and accessories, it works.

KiloSixNiner January 4th, 2012 09:32

So here's my story. Feel free to laugh out loud and pee a little if ya need. I learned.

I found airsoft by mistake. I was in a local surplus store just looking around when I came across these clear plastic M4's. It turned out they were something called airsoft guns. I had target shot most of my life and hadn't owned a BB or pellet gun for years so I decided for $24.99 It was worth a try. The thing ran off of 6 'AA' betteries, and shot at about 150FPS with .12's. After about 50 batteries and a week, it of course broke. Now I was addicted, and had no idea what I was doing. I went out and spent $120 on a clear DPMS Panther with a cheapo pistol included. About a week later I came across ASC and began to read up on the subject. FAIL.

So the DPMS died of course, but at least now I was somewhat prepared. I saved a bit and got a clearsoft ICS M4($330-ish, still works) to play with while I saved. When I eventually had the money I got myself what I consider my first Real airsoft gun, a DBoys Steel version AK47. I paid $400 and it ran like a champ until I decided I wanted something else.

The point here is these guys know what their talking about. DON'T MAKE MY MISTAKES! save up, get a decent gun and upgrade as you can. It's expensive but worth it.

Started with wal-mart guns and worked my way up, Got the 100$ Walmart M4, then bought a walmart shotgun, then, a echo 1 m28, etc..... Now I have a KWA SR10 and a couple other guns!

I started in july, first gun was a G&G m14 socom max... about 10k rounds through it priced at just under 700 bucks after shipping and tax. Nothing wrong with it, no complaints other than expensive mags.... well and shitty plastic stock, but plastic breaks so it's not unexpected.

Opened it up at the end of the season, it was very well tuned from factory, piston was only starting to show signs of wear, upgraded the spring so it shoots 400 fps instead of 360. Need to install a mosfet to protect the trigger contacts and so I can switch to lipos.

Picked up a used kwa m226 ptp... 400ish bucks... replaced the aluminum slide on it because something was dropped either gun or something onto the slide that bent and cracked corner, still worked fine, but I worry about those things. Shoots like a champ.

picked up a used TM p90... I should've known better on this one... 350ish bucks hasn't worked right in the 4 months I've had it.

just bought a new CA p90 for 450. Works great, just need to get a lighter spring for it and install my mosfet from the TM into it so I can use my lipos with it.

I didnt listen to advise.
I purchased a used CA M16 sportline. so it was black but plastic
Withing 4 months I had bought a 170 dollar metal body. and later a systema gearbox. etc etc.

Anyway by the end of the year the only original part was the outer barrel. haha

I sold it at a loss. But to a friend who started new int he sport so he has a solid custom gun.

Purchased a tm p90 for 400
and than imported my own magput pts acr in multicam this year. Well aware I would sink 200 dollars into the guts. Which I just did :)

Still cheaper than hockey. lol

kalnaren January 6th, 2012 13:57

$670 for a BNIB CA36 + mag and battery.

Moonschlagen January 6th, 2012 14:24

First gun was a crappy clearsoft H&K G36C for $180. Tried it, didn't like it and bought a G&G MP5A5 for $340 later that night online. I soon discovered that an MP5 might not be the best at long range outdoor stuff so a few months later I bought an A&K SVD. Then I thought perhaps that might be too ridiculous for close in stuff so then I bought my current workhorse, the full metal ICS M16A3 RAS for close in work and far out stuff. This thing is such a beast and has been reliable so far.

The first one I really wish I had was a Robert Goulet... but fuck, those things are RARE and EXPENSIVE. If you think these guns we're talking about are pricey...

Never did manage to get my hands on one.

swatt13 January 10th, 2012 00:40

400 for a used tm famas back in 2004

I never should have traded mine for that half a pizza...

But I just couldn't afford cigars and booze anymore...

I never should have sold my FA-MAS. That gun was magic.

Curo January 11th, 2012 13:12

I gotta FAMAS now, not a TM but a JG clone, can accept some V2 and V3 parts a little easier to maintain if something does break. Currently shots a feeble 160 fps cause of an airseal prob. but I still got a kill with it last match.

Freeze January 11th, 2012 13:16

Quick question, what is a Robert Goulet?
All the other threads I've seen on them....WTF.
